A welcome to the course, academic malpractice policies, and the fire safety landscape in England and Wales.
Block 1 | What is fire?
How fires start, develop and spread — the fire tetrahedron, ignition sources and the stages of fire growth.
Block 2 | What is a fire door?
How fire doors limit the spread of fire and smoke: compartmentation, why fire doors must be kept in good condition, and the role of routine checks throughout their life.
Block 3 | Legislation and guidance
The key fire safety laws that apply to fire doors: the Responsible Person, the specific requirements for fire door checks, and how standards and guidance support good practice.
Block 4 | Who can undertake fire door checks?
Everyday observations, routine checks and specialist inspections — who can carry out each, the limits of your role and when to escalate a concern.
Block 5 | Fire door certification and standards
The lifecycle of a fire door and how testing, certification and standards evidence its performance — and how to approach older or uncertified doors without assuming a missing label means a problem.
Block 6 | Components of a fire door
The leaf, frame, seals, glazing, hinges, self-closing devices and other hardware: what each does, and the signs of damage, deterioration or alteration to look for.
Block 7 | Putting it into practice
Work through a routine fire door check with realistic examples: checking condition and operation, recording concerns, and knowing when to refer a door for further assessment.

How often should I renew my Fire Door Awareness training?
Your certificate is valid for 12 months. After that, complete the course again to renew. The expiry date is shown on your certificate.
Can I carry out Regulation 10 fire door checks after Fire Door Awareness?
Yes. Fire Door Awareness prepares you to carry out routine fire door checks in your workplace, including those required under Regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022. If you find something outside the scope of your role, the course shows you when and how to escalate it.
How often should fire doors be checked?
In blocks of flats over 11 metres tall in England, Regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 requires communal fire doors to be checked at least every three months, and flat entrance doors at least once a year, as far as reasonably practicable. In other buildings, your fire risk assessment should set how often fire doors are checked.
What is Regulation 10?
Regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 requires the responsible person for a block of flats over 11 metres tall to check fire doors regularly and give residents information about why fire doors matter.
What’s the difference between Fire Door Awareness and Fire Door Inspection?
Fire Door Awareness (4–6 hours) teaches you to carry out routine fire door checks and spot problems, including checks under Regulation 10. Fire Door Inspection (around 20 hours) is for people whose role involves inspecting fire doors in depth: you learn to inspect certified, notional and nominal fire doors, identify non-compliances and record your findings. Fire Door Inspection is also recognised by the IFE.
Who is allowed to inspect fire doors?
Anyone competent can inspect fire doors. In England and Wales there’s no licence or mandatory qualification, but the responsible person for a building should make sure whoever they use has the right training, knowledge and experience. Trained in-house staff can carry out routine checks, while detailed inspections should be done by someone trained to inspect fire doors.
What’s the difference between a fire door check and a fire door inspection?
A fire door check is a routine look at a door’s condition, such as whether it closes fully and its seals and hinges are intact, and is usually done by trained in-house staff. A fire door inspection is a more detailed assessment, recorded in a report. Our Fire Door Awareness course covers checks, and our Fire Door Inspection course covers inspections.
Can our maintenance team carry out fire door checks?
Yes, with the right training. Routine fire door checks, including Regulation 10 checks in residential buildings in England, can be carried out by in-house staff who know what to look for. Our Fire Door Awareness course teaches your team to check fire doors, record what they find and escalate concerns. For detailed inspections, see our Fire Door Inspection course.
